New Delhi: ICC World Cup 2023, on Monday, took an ugly turn after Sri Lanka’s veteran Angelo Mathews became the first player in the history of cricket to be given timed-out.
Angelo Mathews failed to take the field in the allocated time while coming out to bat after Sadeera Samarwickrama’s wicket, and according to the rules, he was deemed out.

What happened
In the 38th match of the ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka was batting first against Bangladesh, when in the 24.2 over mark, they lost their in-form player, Sadeera Samarwickrama, on a total of 135.
Angelo Mathews was supposed to come out to bat next but, he was walking very casually to the ground. But before stepping up on the field, he discovered that the buckle of his helmet was broken. Instinctively, he asked for a replacement, but by the time he got his replacement, Bangladesh appealed for a time-out, as the allocated time of 2 minutes had already been passed.
Angelo Mathews tried to convey his issue to the umpires and Bangladeshi captain Shakib Al Hasan, but the umpires’ hands were tied by the rules and Shakib refused to take the appeal back, and for the first time in the 140 years of history of cricket, Angelo Mathews was deemed time-out.
What is the timed-out rule?
According to MCC’s rulebook of cricket and section 40.1, after a fall of wicket, the following batsman has to take the field within 3 minutes of time, otherwise, they are subjected to be timed out if the opposition captain appeals.
The time limit in the World Cup is even less, and it stands at only 2 minutes.
