“I’m 37 years old…It’s time for the next generation…” Moeen Ali bids adieu to International Cricket

England international all-rounder and number one off-spinner in white ball cricket Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from International cricket.

New Delhi: England international all-rounder and number one off-spinner in white ball cricket Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from International cricket. The announcement came in the early hours of Sunday i.e. 8th September 2024. The right-arm off-spinner was quoted in a Daily Mail interview where Moeen told the interviewer about the reality of his waning age.

I’m 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series. I’ve played a lot of cricket for England. It’s time for the next generation, which was also explained to me. It felt the time was right. I’ve done my part…

Moeen Ali has been one of the most prominent white-ball bowlers in the years following the retirement of Graeme Swann and the diminishing utility of Monty Panesar. Together with Adil Rashid, Ali formed a fierce spin duo predominantly in the white-ball cricket circuit. Ali was part of the ICC T20 Winning World Cup squad of 2022 as well as the ICC ODI World Cup Winning Squad in 2019.

A handy left-hand batsman, Moeen possessed the unique ability of clean ball striking lower down the order. He has been part of many match-winning knocks lower down the order, stitching together constructive partnerships with Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes and other English players.

Interestingly, Moeen is also part of a ‘FAB 4’ which comprises all-rounders like him who have scored more than 5000 runs or taken more than 200 wickets in international cricket. The list also includes his fellow countryman Ben Stokes, West Indian Jason Holder and Bangladesh’s Shakib al Hasan.

CPL Debut at the age of 37!

Although Moeen has parted his trade with international cricket, he will continue to play franchise cricket. Moreover, the English left-hander is also set to make his debut in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League.

Ali will replace Saim Ayub of Pakistan who is back home for international duties for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. Moeen also discussed his retirement plans where he revealed the possibilities of coaching in the future.

A bit of franchise cricket, because I still love playing. But coaching is something I want to do….
