IND vs ENG, First Test: Pope and Hartley shines as England defeats India in the Hyderabad Test

IND vs ENG, First Test: Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley were the heroes for the English side in the second innings.

New Delhi: The English cricket team, after trailing the first two days of the Hyderabad Test, the visitors made a winning comeback on the next two days to register an impressive 28-run victory in the first match of the series.

England, who was trailing by a huge margin of 190 runs in the first innings, put on a strong batting performance in the second innings, thanks to Ollie Pope’s 196, and posted a huge total of 420 on the board, taking a fighting lead of 230 runs.

India, in reply, started well with the openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, as the openers took a positive approach in the tricky 231 runs chase in the fourth innings.

However, England made a great comeback and kept taking back-to-back wickets to keep India under pressure and reduced the hosts to 119 for 7.

Interestingly, Ravichandran Ashwin (28) and KS Bharat (28) decided to stick themselves in between England and the win, as they stitched an important 57-run partnership to get India somewhat back in the game.

Jasprit Bumrah and Md. Siraj tried to get India over the line, but it was Hartley who had the last laugh of the match.

As it happened

Earlier, English skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first.

England got off to a flyer as the openers, Zak Crawly (20) and Ben Duckett (35), started their famous bazball cricket.

However, the Indian spinners made a strong comeback and kept taking regular wickets to bundle out the whole English team on 246.

Notably, England’s situation could have been even worse if not for the skipper Ben Stokes’s brilliant 70 runs innings.

India, in reply, utilized the bazball of their own, and with the help of half-centuries from Ravindra Jadeja (87), KL Rahul (86) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (80), posted a huge total of 436 runs on the board, taking a huge lead of 190 runs in the first innings.

In the second innings, English batsmen looked way more comfortable but were still not able to play a prolonged innings before Ollie Pope took the charge and scored a brilliant 196 to take the innings total to 436, giving the hosts a tricky 231 runs target to chase in the fourth innings.

However, despite a positive start from Rohit Sharma (39) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (15), India kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and was eventually bundled out on 202, to hand over the visitors 28 runs victory in the match, and 1-0 lead in the series.
