India vs Afghanistan: Indian team wears black armbands in honour of David Johnson

The Indian cricket team has decided to feature a black armband in their game against Afghanistan in the Super 8.

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team has decided to feature a black armband in their game against Afghanistan. This was done as a mark of respect for the passing away of the Indian pacer David Johnson. The BCCI put out an official tweet to show the mark of respect for their talented bowler:

Johnson, who had turned out to be India’s one leading bowler in the ’90s played 2 tests for India. David has been battling health issues for some time and was discharged only a few days back. Subsequently, he came back to his residence and died in an accident after the latter fell from his balcony.

Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble issued an official statement to show his condolence as a mark of respect to the Indian pacer. Kumble wrote, “Saddened to hear of the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon, ‘Benny’!”

Johnson clocked at 157.8 km/h!

David Johnson is known for his express-pace delivery against the Aussies. It was the maiden call-up for Johnson and he showed his mettle in front of a packed Indian crowd at the Kotla. Although Johnson featured in only 2 tests, the Karnataka-born pacer has been remembered for his raw pace.

Contrary to his national record, Johnson had a staggering first-class record where he played 39 FC games and picked 125 wickets at an average of 28.63. Furthermore, he featured in 33 List-A matches, picking 41 wickets at 31.46 for Karnataka.

Now coming to the accident, according to Johnson’s friend in the morning David wanted to go to the balcony to light a cigarette. As he had difficulty moving around, a watchman was overlooking him. Subsequently, he went near the balcony and fell. Whether the fall was intentional or whether he actually slipped down is still being investigated.
