IPL 2023: Bhojpuri, Punjabi commentary steal show on Jio Cinema, fans share reactions, memes

New Delhi: The 16th season of the Indian Premier League features commentary in 12 languages, offered by the digital streaming platform Jio Cinema. Apart from the quality of cricket and the introduction of new rules like Impact Player, commentary in various regional languages has been the highlight of the show. Out of the 12, Bhojpuri and Punjabi commentary stood out for the fans.

People are used to cricket commentary in Hindi and English, TV channels also began to offer Tamil, Telugu and Marathi commentary. So, the introduction of Bhojpuri and Punjabi commentary on a pan-India level increased the interest of the viewers. Adding more regional languages is an inclusive approach by Jio Cinema and other languages include Bangla, Oriya, Malayalam, Gujarati and Kannada.

Bhojpuri commentary has a formidable line-up featuring Mohammed Saif, Satya Prakash, Gulam Hussain, Sneh Upadhyay and others. The inaugural encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans also featured film star Ravi Kishan commentating in Bhojpuri which caught everyone’s attention.

Punjabi commentary includes names like Sarandeep Singh, VRV Singh, Sunil Taneja and Palak Sharma. People have been routing for the language and has gained popularity in North India.

Apart from that, some big names have turned to commentary this time. English commentary box features IPL stars like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Sanjana Ganesan and Eoin Morgan while the Hindi commentary features the likes of Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina and Anil Kumble alongside popular personalities like Parthiv Patel and Akash Chopra.

Ex-CSK batter Kedar Jadhav is doing Marathi commentary with players Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddesh Lad and Kiran More. Former Indian cricketers Veda Krishnamurthy and Abhinav Mukund are in the Tamil commentary box while India’s Test batter Hanuma Vihari and Venkatpathy Raju are in the Telugu box.
