Is Taijul Islam the next captain of Bangladesh in test cricket? The Left-hand spinner confident in…

The statement comes after current captain Najmul Hasan Shanto expressed his desire to retire from Test captaincy following the loss against South Africa.

New Delhi: Bangladesh’s No. 1 left-hand spinner Taijul Islam has said that he is ready to take on the role of captaincy and lead the national side. Taijul has been with the Tigers for nearly 10 years. The statement comes after current captain Najmul Hasan Shanto expressed his desire to retire from national duties following the South Africa test series.

Shanto was appointed as Bangladesh’s captain earlier this year and achieved a historic Test series win against Pakistan. However, the team faced a whitewash in both Tests and T20Is during their tour of India. They are now on the brink of losing the two-match Test series against South Africa at home.

Naturally, it seems that the loss at Mirpur does not sit well with the BCB authorities and they have given their ultimatum to the Bangladeshi skipper.

When will the 2nd Test take place between Bangladesh and South Africa?

The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa is set to take place in Chattogram, starting on Tuesday, October 29. South Africa currently leads the series after the Proteas managed to shock the hosts.

Is Shanto’s resignation an opportunity for Taijul?

Taijul Islam was present at the pre-match press conference before the start of the 2nd Test against South Africa. During the conference when Islam was asked about the Shnto’s resignation, the left-hander was quick to remark that:

I haven’t heard anything on this matter (regarding Najmul quitting from captaincy) It’s not part of our role, I’m not fully informed on this. Having played for 10 years, I’m fully prepared (for captaincy)…

Furthermore, the left-hander remarked that the batters need to step up for the second Test against South Africa. He stated that they want to play for victory and that they will adapt to the match conditions. So far, things have not changed in the Bangladeshi camp and a lot will be riding on the second test against South Africa post which some tough calls will be taken by the management.
