Lakshya Sen comes short in the bronze medal match against Lee Zii Jia at Paris Olympics 2024

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen comes short of a bronze medal by a whisker against Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia.

New Delhi: Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen comes short of a bronze medal by a whisker against Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia. Leading after the first game, the Malaysian shuttler came back strongly in the last two games to win the game 21-13, 16-21 & 11-21. In the process, Lee joined a long list of Malaysian players including great names like Lee Chong Wei and Rashid Sidek.

India has never won a gold medal in badminton. The last gold medal chance that India had was back in Rio 16 where PV Sindhu was in touching distance of the gold medal. However, the Indian shuttler was defeated by the then World Champion Carolina Marin. Since then, there has been a huge medal drought for the Indians. Lakshya could have undone that but he missed his mark on both occasions- against Viktor Axelsen and Lee Zii Jia.

Nevertheless, this time odds were against Sen as the Indian shuttler was injured in the right arm going into the second and third sets. A white padding was seen wrapped around Sen’s right arm as he struggled throughout the second half of the match. The difference between the two shuttlers became even more prominent when the Indian shuttler was trailing 9-3 in the last set. Subsequently, Lakshya tried to force his way into the game. However, it was too little too late to make any impact as he ended up losing the game 11-21 to seal the bronze medal for the Malaysian.
