New Delhi: Ricardo Powell with bat and Rusty Theron with ball has finally helped the defending champions Indian Capitals to their first win in the second season to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The two teams who were yet to open their account on the points table came face-to-face with each other in match number 7, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Dehradun on Saturday.
Earlier, Indian Capitals’ skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and opted to bowl first.
His decision was proven right when both the openers of Southern Super Stars, Munaweera (4) and Upul Tharanga (19), were dismissed cheaply, reducing the Southern Super Stars’ score to 33 for 2.
Indian Capitals kept taking wickets at regular intervals, but Chaturanga de Silva (56*), managed to take his team to a fighting total of 163 for 6 in 20 overs.
Rusty Theron and Ashley Nurse, were the Capitals’ best bowlers with two wickets each, while Isuru Udana and KP Appanna took one wicket each.
Capitals started the chase in a terrible manner when they were reduced to 21 for 2, after losing Gautam Gambhir (3) and Gnaneswara Rao (0), cheaply.
However, Ricardo Powell (100), along with Kirk Edwards (45*), added 128 runs for the third wicket and took India to a comfortable 7-wicket victory with 20 balls to spare.

The defending champions with this win have kept their playoff hopes alive, as they entered the top 3 of the points table, with a healthy net run rate.
Southern Super Stars on the other hand, now has to win all their remaining matches to qualify for the next round.
