New Delhi: The memories of the 2011 World Cup victory are still fresh in the minds of Indian cricket fans, and who can forget the winning six by MS Dhoni? India’s World Cup-winning captain Dhoni inaugurated the 2011 World Cup victory memorial at the Wankhede stadium. The memorial has been built at the location where MS Dhoni’s historic winning six had landed in the stands. The five seats in the stand have been reserved for the memorial.

India rewrote history by lifting the cup for the second time. While Yuvraj Singh was the Player of the Tournament for his all-round contributions, MS Dhoni was the person who scripted the victory. The wicketkeeper-batter was invited to inaugurate the memorial and was also gifted the iconic picture where he just hit the six and Yuvraj can be seen with his arms wide to celebrate the victory.

Chennai Super Kings also shared a video in which MSD can be seen walking to the historic stand and cutting the ribbon to inaugurate the memorial.

In the World Cup finals, chasing 275, India lost the openers quickly. Young Virat Kohli and experienced campaigner Gautam Gambhir stabilised the inning with their 83-run partnership. After Kohli fell for 35, MS Dhoni promoted himself ahead of Yuvraj.

Gautam Gambhir went on to score 97(122) while Dhoni scored the match winning 91* off 79 and hit the winning runs. He was also the Player of the Match in the finals.

Dhoni is currently playing in the IPL 2023 for CSK and will face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at Wankhede stadium on April 8 at 7:30 pm.
