New Delhi: After being found overweight in the prescribed category, the Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the finals of the Women’s 50kg Freestyle competition. Subsequently, this has created a huge controversy in the entire sporting world with various sides coming up with their explanations.

Subsequently, Phogat decided to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge the weigh-in rule of the Olympics. Moreover, Vinesh also demanded that a joint silver medal should be given to her along with the grappler who becomes the runner-up at the finals of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg.

Vinesh Phogat who was set to compete in the finals against Sarah Hildebrandt now finds herself in one of the greatest controversies in Indian Olympic history. The magnitude of the decision has been so far-reaching that it took a toll on the Indian wrestler who decided to retire immediately.

Thomas Bach clarifies his stance on the entire matter

In an already over-stretched topic, Thomas Bach has added fuel to the entire controversy. When asked about the demands of Vinesh for a joint silver medal in the 50kg category, Bach said “If you ask generally about having two silver medals in one category then my answer is no…”

The final decision which can prove detrimental in Vinesh’s case lies with the CAS. IOA has said that it will be following the decree of the CAS with utmost respect and integrity. To give Phogat an equal opportunity in front of the CAS proceeding, India has sent Harish Salve who is a renowned lawyer himself.

On the other hand, the CAS has come out with their statement which stated: “An application was filed at the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her…” With both sides gearing up with their arsenals, only time will tell whether the weight tilts in favour of the Indian wrestler or not.
