‘No discussions regarding World Cup…’: PCB clarifies stand on Asia Cup, World Cup, says Najam Sethi was ‘misquoted’

While the media speculated that the World Cup to be held in India will also be played in a similar hybrid format, PCB cleared its stance that chief Najam Sethi was misquoted.

New Delhi: Asia Cup 2023 is set to be hosted by Pakistan and amid all the debate and discussions, PCB proposed a hybrid model with India’s matches to be played on a neutral venue. While the media speculated that the World Cup to be held in India will also be played in a similar hybrid format, PCB cleared its stance that chief Najam Sethi was misquoted.

A press release by the board stated that no such discussion for ICC World Cup has taken place. The board said that the proposal of a hybrid model for the Asia Cup 2023 is under discussion within the Asian Cricket Council.

PCB said that Najam Sethi, in the recent press interaction, did not give remarks with reference to the World Cup to be held in October and the matter of hosting has not yet been discussed by ICC.

The board also mentioned disappointment from a leading English language newspaper, which misquoted and misinterpreted Sethi’s comments to believe that the hybrid model has been proposed to ICC. This led to speculations that just like the Asia Cup, Pakistan’s matches will be played outside India in the ICC tournament.

Meanwhile, the press release affirmed that they will be proposing the hybrid model in front of the ICC, which means that the Pakistan team is disinterested in travelling to India in October. PCB said that one should not consider that the hybrid model will not be advocated at an ICC forum at the right time.

The ACC Men’s Asia Cup, which will be played in the 50-over format, will be held in September 2023.
