Not just money grosser, IPL a global brand now; becomes 2nd most lucrative sports league

India’s cricketing extravaganza has taken the global community by storm and has become second most profitable league across the world, with just NFL staying ahead of it.

New Delhi: From setting the cash registers since its launch in 2007 to emerging as one of the most lucrative & popular sporting league, the Indian Premiere League (IPL) has indeed come a long way.

The bidding for sale of media rights for the IPL, for a 5 year term, is currently underway and the League has already fetched over Rs 43,000 crore and may even go up by end of Monday. Going by this figure, the value of rights for every match of the tournament has crossed Rs 100 crore mark. This in turn means that BCCI will rake in at least Rs 100 crore for every IPL match.

According to available reports, the digital rights value has already surpassed Rs 105 crore mark. There are a total of 4 specific packages under which e-auction is being conducted for 74 games for a 5-year period. Soon, the number of matches are likely to be increased to 94 games in final 2 years.

The bidding began on Sunday for broadcast rights, digital rights, a dual package that includes rights for high-value matches as well as rights to broadcast the IPL match in foreign nations.

The bidding is expected to get more fierce today as big giants are clamouring to buy the rights for broadcasting IPL matches across the globe.

The media rights will be given to the winning bidder for a period of 5 years from 2023-27 cycle.

IPL currently ranks as 4th biggest sporting league in the world in terms of “per match broadcasting fees”. However, with the intense bidding war, it has already leapgfrogged to 2nd spot and may even lower the gap with top league, by end of bidding.

As of today, National Football League (NFL) is the most lucrative league. Its one match generates revenue of over Rs 135 crore.
