Olympics: While Aditi Ashok battles for medal, Understand Golf, its 18 holes, rules & rounds

In the Olympics, 60 athletes take part in 4 rounds of game, consisting of 18 holes over 4 days. The game pattern is same for all 4 rounds and the rounds usually last for more than 4 hours.

New Delhi: Indian golfer Aditi Ashok’s impressive performance in Tokyo Olympics has put her in contention for a medal. Her fantastic show has put herself in 2nd spot with score of 12 under par after 3 rounds of game.

In round 3, Aditi Ashok gave a competitors a run for money and secured 2nd position. This is her second Olympic appearance. She finished at 41st spot in 2016 Rio de Janerio Olympics.

Here is a primer on Golf, where we explain about its holes and rounds.

A golf course has 18 holes, where players vie for attaining maximum score. A golf game comprises of 4 rounds of golf, so that takes total number of holes to 72. Each hole has a par score attached to it.

Par score is number of shots that golfer attains while hitting the ball and sinking it into the cup/hole on the green land.

Par score depends on 2 factors – distance from tee to hole and difficulty of the course. 4 hole means that you are supposed to take 4 shots to put the ball from the tee into the cup/hole.

How Golf works at Olympics

In the Olympics, 60 athletes take part in 4 rounds of game, consisting of 18 holes over 4 days. The game pattern is same for all 4 rounds and the rounds usually lasts for more than 4 hours.

Depending on degree of difficulty and distance from tee to green, the holes are categorized into different layers – three, four or five. If a player succeeds in hitting the ball into the hall, he is said to have achieved par.

If he succeeds in doing so with 1 stroke remaining, it is called birdie while doing so with 2 strokes less is called Eagle. Using 1 stroke more than the part is called bogey & 2 strokes over par is a double bogey (very bad).

60 Golf athletes compete in 4 rounds

In Tokyo Olympics, the par score for a round is 71 for 18 hoes. A player who completes 18 holes with 68 strokes on 71-par course is said to be ‘THREE under’. ‘Three under’ is better than ‘Two under’ which is in turn superior to ‘One under’.

All 60 athletes compete in all 4 rounds of the game. Player who scores with least number of strokes in all 4 rounds is declared as the winner.

If the scores are tied at the end of 4 rounds, separate play-offs will be held for the competing players.
