New Delhi: Popularly known as ‘The Indian Tigress’, Ritu Phogat, India’s mixed martial arts (MMA) star is ready to square off against Stamp Fairtex in the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final on Friday, December 3. This bout is a part of the Winter Warriors card of the ONE Championships. The encounter will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang at 5:00 PM IST.
The chances of winning are high for both fighters. The winner of today’s bout will have to fight against the popular champion Angela Lee for the atomweight title.
Phogat who is a wrester-turned MMA fighter has performed incredibly well since her first MMA loss in May 2021. So far, in her last two fights, the 27-year-old MMA artist has won over Meng Bo (quarterfinal, on September 3) and Jenelyn Olsim (semi-final, October 29) which enabled her to reach the record of 7-1.
Talking about her preparation for this match, Phogat said, “I’ve been focused on the finals for a very long time and I’ve trained for countless hours for the past two years. Victory is closer than I can imagine and I plan to grab it with both hands. This match is crucial for my career and India’s reputation. India has never had a female MMA champion in the past and now I have the power to change the narrative and place an Indian woman on the global MMA stage. I will try my best to make India proud.”
On the other hand, her opponent from Thailand has an impressive record as she also holds 7-1. Currently, she is positioned in the second spot in the women’s atomweight rankings. The 24-year-old fighter holds close to 100 – Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA fights belts under her name. She is also popular for her blinding strikes. Besides, she is the former Thailand champion in Muay Thai and Kickboxing (atomweight category).
