New Delhi: It was raining money for women cricketers at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai yesterday, as five franchisees opened their purse strings to put together their team for the upcoming tournament. The WPL, seen as the IPL version for women’s cricket is set to begin from March 4-26 at two stadiums in Mumbai & Navi Mumbai.

Among the players up for grabs, Smriti Mandhana stole the show as she garnered a whopping sum of Rs 3,40 crore. For roping in the leading cricketer, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) broke the bank and bought her at the whopping price. Deepti Sharma was another expensive player bought by UP Warrioz at a price of Rs 2.6 crore. Indian skipper Hamanpreet Kaur was picked by Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.80 crore .

Among other foreign marquee players that were sold at an exorbitant price included Ashleigh Gardner (Rs 3.2 crore), Nat Sciver (Rs 3.2 crore).

Smriti Mandhana was the first player to go under the hammer and also fetched the highest price at the inaugural WPL auction 2023, registering her name in the history books.

Though, the lavish spending by RCB Bangalore in the WPL auction became a talking point among cricket fans, what also created oodles of laughter was women cricketer’s comparison to Pakistani players in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

A couple of Twitter users poked fun at Pakistani cricketers and compared latter’s pay package with Women in Blue. A user wrote, even Pakistani skipper Babar Azam stands nowhere when compared to Smriti Mandhana.

“Babar Azam Price in PSL – 2.30 CR. SMRITI MANDHANA – 3.4 Cr. And they Compare PSL with IPL #WPLAuction #WomensIPL,” wrote one Twitter user.

A couple of users also commented on RCB Banglore, over its spending spree for buying top marquee players.
