New Delhi: A rigorous and exciting marketing strategy can be seen for the upcoming 44th Chess Olympiad. Recently, a private school in Perambur, Chennai erected a 6,400 square feet chessboard along with large banners and students’ faces painted black and white as chess pieces.

Tamil Nadu Hindu Endowment Minister, Sekar Babu and Chennai Mayor, Priya Rajan inaugurated the chess event in Everyone School at Perambur in Chennai. During the event, eight cutouts of the mascot, Thambi, with a height of 14 ft. and width of 6 ft. were also placed around the chess board. 50 girls painted their faces in chess theme, wearing a T-shirt with the Thambi mascot whereas 50 other students wore face masks with the image of the Thambi mascot, wearing white dhotis and shirts.

“This is a great gala Chess event with a very spectacular view for us to see, which was organized on behalf of the 44th Chess Olympiad. We, students, were dressed entirely as 32 chess coins and we also did the chess moves, which was very impressive,” said Beevi Fathima, a Grade 9 student of the school.

India is hosting the Chess Olympiad in Mamallapuram, Chennai from July 28 to August 10. Previously, as part of the marketing strategy, the Napier bridge was painted like a chess board, and AR Rahman created a theme song for the event.
