New Delhi: Defending Champions India won against Pakistan in their opening encounter of the SAFF Women's Championships 2022. The Indian team beat Pakistan 3-0 at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal. Dangmei Grace and Soumya Gaguloth stood up to the occasion and scored goals for the Blue Tigresses. India displayed aggressive play and the penetrations into Pakistan's circle led to a mistake by the goalkeeper Shahid Bukhari and Pakistan's captain. Sandhiya Ranganathan playing in the left channel sent a low cross that led to a self-goal by Pakistan. This was crucial in turning the momentum of the game. Anjum Tamang went for a fine assist from right from the edge of the box and passed the ball to Dangmei Grace, who scored the goal. India was in total control after this. During the additional time in the second half of the match, Pakistan lost control over the game and another low cross from the left-hand side went just right for Soumya Gaguloth, who kicked the ball to give India a 3-0 victory. India is placed in Pool A with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives while Pool B has Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. Hosts Nepal won against Bhutan 4-0 in the opening match for Pool B. Nepal has been one of the dominating teams in the last four championships. India will now face the Maldives while Pakistan will play against Bangladesh on September 10.
