New Delhi: Sex in the Olympics village has been a reality for almost three decades now, despite the organisers denying its existence on every occasion.

The Olympics held every four years, celebrate the sporting spirit of thousands of sportspersons and is no less than a jamboree or a month long carnival.

As many put it, expecting celibacy in extremely fit and attractive individuals during this period would be a myth, the sex saga got revealed in Seoul Olympics in 1988 and since then, it has become a part of the sporting event.

In Seoul Games, condoms were distributed at the Seoul Games to prevent the spread of HIV-AIDS. Since then, it has become more of a custom at every Olympics.

This aspect of Olympics has been under-reported and undermined, however, reports of condoms use are common.

A leading portal GQ India gives an account of condom use in the Olympics village and the figures are simply startling.

History of Sex at Olympic village

1988 Seoul Olympics: Condoms officially arrived in village

It was South Korea which officially started the tradition of distributing condoms to participants during the 1988 Olympics. This was done to prevent spread of HIV AIDS as it was reaching alarming proportions during that time. Reports suggest that about 8,500-odd condoms were distributed at Seoul Games.

Many condoms were found littering the roofs of athletes’ quarters in Olympic village. This forced the organisers to impose ban on outdoor sex.

Sydney Olympics: 70,000 condoms distributed

By now, sex in the Olympics village became an open secret and rather became a challenge for the officials. The officials, rather than advising abstinence, distributed about 70,000 condoms to athletes & wrestlers. However, this figure fell short in just a few days and another 20,000 condoms were shipped to the village.

2002 Winter Olympics: 1,00,000 condoms distributed

Salt Lake City in US, where the games took place, had strong reservations against such ‘sex adventures’ happening under their nose. When about 1,00,000 condoms were distributed free of cost, they also raised loud voice of protest.

4,50,000 condoms: Rio Olympics created record

The last Olympics games created a record of sorts with numbers of condoms witnessing a three-fold hike than the Olympics that were held in London. According to reports, Rio organisers went a step further by throwing in another 175,000 sachets of lubricant.
