New Delhi: Bangladesh’s no.1 allrounder who is currently playing a 2-match series against India in India is embroiled in a strange and peculiar case. The left-arm all-rounder will be returning home for the first time since Bangladesh ousted its former Prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was the leader of the infamous group- Awami League which allegedly was responsible for an autocratic rule in the country.
Shakib was a friend and ally of the Awami League, even becoming a member of the parliament from the Awami League in January this year. However, things spiralled out once there was a change in the government. All those sympathisers of the Awami League were castrated and shunned away inside the country.
Naturally, in such a situation there is a high probability that Shakib might also face the backlash from his countrymen whom he represents. The condition is more precarious after he was found guilty in a murder case in Dhaka last month. Shakib was allegedly booked along with 147 others in the same.
“…No one will be harassed unfairly…”- Shahriar Nafees
Although things look dicey back home in Bangladesh, Shahriar Nafees who is in charge of cricket operations has confirmed that no case will be filed against the Bangladeshi all-rounder. Nafees remarked-
I think the honourable chief adviser, law adviser, and sports adviser have spoken very clearly regarding Shakib Al Hasan. There is a clear message from the Bangladesh government that no one will be harassed unfairly in the cases that have been filed….
Nafees’ statements were confirmed by Bangladesh’s law adviser, Asif Nazrul, who also expressed hope that Shakib would not be arrested in connection with the case. Shakib will now be playing in the second test of the India vs Bangladesh ongoing series which is scheduled to take place in Kanpur.
