‘So Close yet so far’: Neeraj Chopra misses Diamond League crown by 0.01 m

India’s double Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra missed the Diamond League crown by a whisker as he came second in the Men’s Javelin throw final.

New Delhi: India’s double Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra missed the Diamond League crown by a whisker as he came second in the Men’s Javelin throw final. Chopra’s best throw measured at 86.86 m just behind Anderson Peters of Grenada who won the gold medal with a throw of 87.87 m.

Neeraj had scripted history in 2022, winning India’s first track and field athlete to win the prestigious Diamond League trophy. Furthermore, the 26-year-old also won the gold medal in the prestigious Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Subsequently, the 26-year-old clinched the silver medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. It has been a hot and cold season for Neeraj, after sustaining a groin injury, the Indian athlete missed out on a well-deserved gold medal after a back injury held him back. Now, in the Diamon League, the star javelin thrower again missed his mark by a whisker.

Nevertheless, Chopra will pocket Rs 10 lakh for his second-place finish in the grand finale which marked the end of the prestigious Diamond League series after 14 legs, as well as the end of the international athletics season.

Anderson Peters won the gold medal with the 87.87 m while Neeraj came second. The bronze medal was won by Julian Weber of Germany. The top three medalists led the 7 men’s starting list throughout the event.

Chopra ended a season of ‘near misses’ in the athletics calendar year of 2024. Neeraj will look to mend his mistakes and perform better next year.
