New Delhi: In a recent interview by Mark Taylor, the former Australian skipper has predicted that the injury to Cameron Green has opened up the window of opportunity for Cameron Bancroft in the upcoming 5-match Test series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Bancroft was previously sidelined from the Australian national team due to the Sand Paper incident in 2018 which forced the Australian to be sidelined. Cameron Bancroft returned to the side after a gap of 1 year to be a part of the Ashes Squad in 2019. However, the Australian batsman has been unable to make it to the national side since then. Now, with an unfortunate and unexpected injury to Green, luck is finally shining on Bancroft.

Cameron Green’s unexpected injury!

Green is likely to miss the upcoming five-match Test series against India at home due to surgery for a stress fracture on his lower back, according to reports. The 25-year-old seam-bowling all-rounder has previously suffered four stress fractures in his back but has not encountered any issues in that area since 2019.

“Smith at 4, Bancroft to open?…”- Mark Taylor

Green’s absence has sent the settled XI of India into a huge problem as the Aussies would have to rethink their right combination to face the Indian challenge. With the departure of David Warner from the cricketing scenes, things have become even more tricky for the administration.

To solve this problem, Mark Taylor, Australia’s former skipper remarked on the show ‘Wide World of Sports’ that-

I think Smith will move back to No.4. So the question is who will open? I’d love to see a right-handed opening batsman get the opportunity. And to me at the moment … I would have Bancroft penciled in alongside (Usman) Khawaja…

Besides the inclusion of Bancroft, Taylor feels that the selectors could also include the young opener Sam Konstas who has shown a lot of promise in the domestic circuit at the ongoing Sheffield Shield.
