Tokyo Olympics: India loses its ‘gold’ dream to Argentina; will contest for bronze

The proud Rani Rampal-led squad will now clash with Great Britain for the bronze medal on August 6.

Indian women hockey team loses against Argentina in the semifinals of Tokyo Olympics by 2-1, on Wednesday. Indian Drag-flicker Gurjeet Kaur gave India a lead of 1-0 within the first two minutes of the match, turning a penalty corner into a goal.

However, Argentina soon make use of a penalty corner and captain Noel Barrionuevo score the first goal for the team in the second quarter.

Later in the thrilled third hour, Argentina scored their second goal despite excellent end-to-end defense by Goal Keeper Savita Punia and Deep Grace Ekka.

The two teams had a challenging contest in the final quarter, though Argentina successfully maintained its lead and won a taxing battle by 2-1.

India’s hopes of making it to the finals have down crashing to the ground after the defeat. Nevertheless, the proud Rani Rampal-led squad will now clash with Great Britain for the bronze medal on August 6.
