Weightlifting at CWG 2022: Popy Hazarika finishes 7th place 

Indian weightlifter Popy Hazarika finished with 183 kg after her clean and jerk attempt.

New Delhi: Indian weightlifter Popy Hazarika finished with 183 kg after her clean and jerk attempt. She participated in the women’s 59kg event at the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. In the game, Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal took home the gold medal by lifting a total of 206 kg.

The silver went to Jessica Gordon-Brown with an aggregate of 197kg (86kg+111kg). The Bronze medal went to Canadian weightlifter Tali Darsigny (87kg+109kg).

Who is Popy Hazarika?

Popy Hazarika was born on December 8, 1998, in Namti Salkathani village of Assam’s Sibsagar district. It is reported that she lost her father at the age of 10 who worked as a driver. Hazarika was raised by her mother as she took over the responsibility of earning and raising Popy and her siblings.

She trained herself after getting the enrollment at the SAI Training Centre in Golaghat. She is the state championship in 2016. In 2018, she won the silver medal in the 59kg category at the Junior Nationals. At the Senior Nations in 2020, she also won a silver medal.

 

She made her international debut in 2021 in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, held at the Tashkent.
