Who is Sanket Mahadev who brought first medal for India in CWG 2022?

He is a student of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Notably, he is a three-time national champion whose father runs a paan shop. 

New Delhi: Sanket Mahadev, the Indian weightlifter has won the first medal for India in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Aged 20 years, the weightlifter represented India in the 55 kg category and secured a silver medal by lifting a total of 248 kg.

Who is Sanket Mahadev?

The current young sensation, Sanket Mahadev was born on November 1, 2001. The Indian weightlifter hailed from Maharashtra’s Sangli. 

He is a student of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Notably, he is a three-time national champion whose father runs a paan shop. 

While talking to the Economic Times before CWG 2022, he told, “If I can win gold, I am sure recognition will come my way. It is my dream to be able to support my father and show him my gratitude for all that he has done for me.”

The 20-year-old weightlifter injured himself while lifting 143 kgs while competing for gold. 

In 2020 at the Khelo India University Games, Sanket set a new record of 138 kg in clean and jerk lift to secure a gold medal in the tournament. He also created a new national record of 113 kg in the Commonwealth Championship in 2021 and won the gold medal in the competition which was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Sanket struggled for a decent job and used to help his father at the paan shop and food stall, with a dream that one day his father can take a break. 

Moreover, he was successful in all his three attempts to lift 107, 111, and 113 kg.
