New Delhi: Indian badminton fans can have a huge sigh of relief as their favourite badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty aka the ‘baddie boys” have already qualified for the quarterfinals. However, things look grim for the women’s duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa as they stare at the possibility of an early exit from the group stages.
Crasto and Ponnappa faced back-to-back defeats against Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida of Japan and Kime So Yeon/Kong Hee Yong of South Korea to languish at the lower half of the table in Group C. The Indian duo now have a do-or-die situation as they take on Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu from Australia. Tanisha/Ashwini not only need to win their final group game but also need some results in their favour to qualify.

On the other hand, Lakshya Sen, India’s poster boy in men’s singles came from behind to defeat the World No. 52 Julien Carraggi of Belgium. Sen will now take on Jonatan Christie from Indonesia.
Why did Satwik/Chirag qualify for the quarters after playing their first group game?
Satwik/Chirag qualified for the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics 2024 after the German duo of Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel pulled out of the tournament due to a knee injury to Lamsfuss. All the matches played against the German duo stand null and void according to the rules.
With the departure of Mark and Marvin, Group C was left with only three pairs- Satwik/Chirag, Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar (FRA) and Muhammad Rian Ardianto/Fajar Alfian (INA). The French pair eventually crashed out after loosing both their matches against Satwik/Chirag and Ardianto/Alfian.
Naturally, the Indian pair and the Indonesian pair found themselves qualified for the quarters even before the final group stage match of Group C of the Paris Olympics 2024.
