World Athletics Championship Day 6: Javelin thrower Annu Rani qualifies for finals, another upset for Parul Chaudhary on track

In her second attempt, Rani threw at a distance of 55.35 m, but it was her third attempt that aided her qualification.

New Delhi: Day 6 started well for India as the ace javelin thrower Annu Rani qualified for the Women’s Javelin Throw finals. She threw the javelin at a distance of 59.60 m to stand 5th in group B and 8th overall in the qualification round. On the other hand, Parul Chaudhary failed to qualify for the Women’s 5000 m finals.

In group B, Annu Rani started with a foul, while China’s Shiying Liu and Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi threw 63.86 m and 64.32 m respectively to qualify for the finals. The qualification mark for the finals was set at 62.50 m, however, athletes also qualify if they are among the top 12 in the qualification round.

In her second attempt, Rani threw at a distance of 55.35 m, but it was her third attempt that aided her qualification. She threw the javelin at a distance of 59.60 m in her third attempt. She did not qualify by hitting the automatic qualification mark but managed to be at the 8th position to qualify ahead. However, she has a personal best throw of 63.82 m, which came in this season. It will her second final at the World Athletics Championships, as she stood 8th in Doha in 2019.

She will play in the finals on July 22 at 6:50 am IST.

Women’s 5000 m

India’s long-distance runner, Parul Chaudhary, faced another upset as she failed to qualify for the finals. Earlier she participated in the Women’s 3000 m Steeplechase and even after clocking her personal best time of 9:38.09, she could not qualify ahead.

In the 5000 m category, she clocked 15:54.03 to stand at the 17th position in Heat 2 and 31st overall. Parul has a personal best timing of 15:36.03 while her season best stands at 15:39.77. Ethiopia’s Letensenbet Gidey topped the qualification round with a timing of 14:52.27.
