World Athletics Championships 2022: Neeraj Chopra enters finals along with other Indians, check when & where to watch

New Delhi: Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra qualified for the finals of Men’s Javelin Throw on day 7 of the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon. He threw the javelin at a distance of 88.39 m in his first attempt to qualify for the championship finals for the first time. Along with Chopra, India’s young javelin thrower Rohit Yadav also qualified for the finals.

Men’s Javelin Throw (Qualification Round)

Neeraj Chopra was the first thrower in group A of the qualification round and had a not-so-busy outing in Oregon as it took him just one attempt to qualify. The qualification mark set for the finals stood at 83.50 m, while Chopra threw at 88.39 m. He stood second in the overall qualification rankings as Anderson Peters threw the spear at a distance of 89.91 m.

21-year-old Rohit Yadav threw the spear at a distance of 80.42 m in his first and the best attempt to make it to the finals as he stood 11th in the qualification round. His second attempt was a foul and the third one went at a distance of 77.32 m.

Indians in finals

After Murali Sreeshankar and Avinash Sable gained a spot in the finals of Men’s Long Jump and Men’s 3000 m Steeplechase, it was Annu Rani who did it in Women’s Javelin Throw. Sreeshankar and Sable did not win a medal, but their effort has been recorded in the history of Indian athletics.

Rani threw the javelin at a distance of 59.60 m in her third attempt to reach the finals. One could reach the finals with a throw of 62.50 m or by being in the top 12, and she stood 8th in the qualification round.

On day 7, apart from Chopra and Rohit, it was Eldhose Paul who not only reached the finals but also became the first Indian triple jumper to do so. Though Paul did not meet the qualification mark of 17.05 m, he jumped 16.68 m to stand at the 12th position and be the last man to qualify for the finals. Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker also participated in the Men’s Triple Jump, but could not make it to the finals.

When and where to watch?

Annu Rani will play her finals on July 23 at 6:50 am IST.  The next one in line is Eldose Paul who will play in the Men’s Triple Jump finals on July 24 at 6:30 am IST. Neeraj Chopra and Rohit Yadav will play their finals on July 24 at 7:05 am IST.

India will have their three athletes fielded in the finals at World Athletics Championship on July 24. The championship is streaming on Sony Liv on OTT and Sony Ten 2 on television.
