WPL 2023 DC vs GG: Marizanne Kapp wreaks havoc with 5-wicket haul to restrict Giants on 105

She exploited the seam movement and thrashed the top order to put Delhi Capitals in a comfortable position.

New Delhi: Marizanne Kapp picked her maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket to restrict Gujarat Giants to 105/9. She exploited the seam movement and thrashed the top order to put Delhi Capitals in a comfortable position. Kim Garth, with her 32* off 37, played a slow but fighting knock to help Giants cross the 100-run mark.

Kapp picked up Sabbhineni Meghana’s wicket on the second ball from a yorker. In her next over, she picked two consecutive wickets dismissing the power hitters Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner. Kapp bowled her South African teammate Wolvaardt, who was playing her first WPL game replacing Beth Mooney, and trapped Gardner lbw to leave Giants 9/3.

Harleen Deol was hitting boundaries while wickets were falling on the other end. After scoring 20 off 14, she was also dismissed by Kapp as Capitals took a good review. Meg Lanning brought in Kapp for her last over, where she dismissed Sushma Verma to complete her five-wicket haul.

Shikha Pandey took three wickets, including Dayalan Hemalatha at the top, and Tanuja Kanwar for 13(19) & Sneh Rana during death. Radha Yadav knocked Georgia Wareham’s stumps to break the 33-run stand between her and Garth.

Apart from picking up wickets, the DC bowlers managed to put pressure with tight lengths and regular close appeals. The Giants never looked in the game and this was their second batting collapse this season.

Some decisions by captain Sneh Rana and the team management were questionable, including dropping last game’s Player of the Match Sophia Dunley and Rana holding herself back in the batting order.

With the likes of Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Marizanne Kapp and Jemimah Rodrigues, DC should not face many problems in chasing the total. Gujarat Giants would need the golden arm of Ashleigh Gardner to deliver along with contributions from Rana and Garth.
