New Delhi: Indian batter playing for Mumbai Indians was the first wicket in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. Tanuja Kanwar dismissed Yastika in the third over to claim the first-ever wicket in WPL. The first six of the tournament was hit by West Indian captain Hayley Matthews and was shot to watch on repeat.
The first-ever WPL match began between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants and bowling first, uncapped Tanuja Kanwar made a mark. The left-arm spinner picked Yastika Bhatia after she tried to slap the ball and handed it instead to Georgia Wareham’s hands. Bhatia was under pressure after playing a lot of dot balls and had to end her inning at 1(8).

The first maximum of WPL 2023 was hit by Hayley Matthews on the first ball of the second over, bowled by Manis Joshi. The pacer bowled a good length delivery close to the off stump and Matthews picked it up to hit a six behind the square. The six was followed by a misfield in the deep which gave Matthews four more.

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner, who was also the Player of the Tournament in the recently concluded Women’s T20 World Cup, bowled the first ball of the tournament while Yastika faced it. Known for a great economy and wicket-taking ability, Gardner gave just two runs in the first over to give a good start to Gujarat Giants.
Giants’ captain Beth Mooney won the toss and chose to bowl first. Mumbai Indians are led by Harmanpreet Kaur and are playing with ten bowling options, including the part-timers.
