Sonam Kapoor acknowledges Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and others for empowering women in cinema

New Delhi: Sonam Kapoor, who has been on a hiatus from acting to embrace motherhood, recently attended an event in Mumbai. During an interview with India Today, the actress expressed her admiration for fellow actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Tabu, and more, recognizing their contributions to giving “agency” to women on-screen.

While discussing the current landscape of filmmaking, Sonam was asked if it’s become easier to produce certain kinds of films today. She responded by mentioning that even creating a film like “Thank You For Coming,” produced by her sister Rhea Kapoor and her father Anil Kapoor, isn’t necessarily easier. However, she wholeheartedly praised the actresses who are actively involved in such projects.

Specifically, Sonam acknowledged the roles of actresses like Kriti Sanon, Bhumi Pednekar, Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, Alia Bhatt, and Deepika Padukone in films that empower women. She emphasized that artists like Kareena, Tabu, Alia, and Deepika have played pivotal roles in shaping this narrative.

She also took the opportunity to pay tribute to veteran actresses from earlier generations like Waheeda Rehman, Nutan, and Nargis. According to Sonam, it’s crucial to recognize and appreciate the women who have paved the way for today’s actresses to have more agency in their roles.

On the professional front, Sonam Kapoor’s last film was the crime thriller “Blind,” directed by Shome Makhija and produced by Sujoy Ghosh. Following her role in “The Zoya Factor” in 2019, “Blind” marked her return to a full-fledged role.

Her sister Rhea Kapoor and father Anil Kapoor are producing the comedy-drama film “Thank You For Coming,” which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Gala presentation section. The film features Bhumi Pednekar, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, and Shehnaaz Gill and is set to release theatrically on October 6.

Additionally, Rhea Kapoor is backing the film “The Crew,” starring Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Tabu, and Diljit Dosanjh. Recent reports also suggest that Sonam Kapoor will work on the film adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s novel “Battle for Bittora” next year.
