Next Year, Galaxeye Will Launch the First-Ever Multi-Sensor Satellite in World

Mission Drishti, according to GalaxEye Space co-founder and CEO Suyash Singh, synchronises two complementing sensors, which constitutes ground-breaking data fusion.

New Delhi: A new space company GalaxEye, in Chennai will launch Mission Drishti, the first multi-sensor satellite in history next year. This revolutionary satellite will be able to monitor Earth at all hours, day, or night, and through any amount of cloud cover.

Mission Drishti, according to GalaxEye Space co-founder and CEO Suyash Singh, synchronises two complementing sensors, which constitutes ground-breaking data fusion. To enhance the correlation and analytical usefulness of the data obtained, the new multi-sensor satellite will simultaneously record data from both Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical sensors.

According to Singh, present optical sensors can take detailed photographs of Earth, down to the level of vegetation in fields, but they are useless when it is overcast or at night. Since SAR technology does not need sunlight, it may be used at night, expanding the satellite’s usefulness. “The current sensors are not available in the absence of sunlight or if there is a cloud cover. SAR is a very good sensor, not dependent on sunlight, and can work at night,” Singh said.

Once fully operational, the technique will allow for worldwide coverage in less than 12 hours using a small satellite constellation to provide photos with exceptionally high resolution.

In addition to the defence and intelligence sectors, the insurance industries in agriculture and natural disasters have been recognised as possible consumers for the IIT-M incubated startup. Singh thinks that the information gathered through Mission Drishti might help both insurance companies and their customers save time and effort during the claims process. He said that ten satellites are in the works, with the final number determined by how much data is needed.

In 2020, Singh, Kishan Thakkar, Denil Chawda, Rakshit Bhatt, Pranit Mehta, and Professor S R Chakravarthy founded GalaxEye, which has since formed partnerships and commercial contracts with several leading organisations in the space-tech ecosystem, including the American space software provider Antaris Inc. Together with QL Space, Ananth Technologies, XDLINX Labs, and Dassault Systemes, they have formed many strategic alliances.
