Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg comment about having too many employees who are chilling at work

Sundar Pichai talked about low productivity per employee at the company while Zuckerberg stated that there are a ‘bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here.’

New Delhi: CEOs of two tech giants, Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai, pointed out that the companies have too many employees and some of them are just chilling at work. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, expressed his concern subtly while Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, pointed it out directly.

Sundar Pichai talked about low productivity per employee at the company while Zuckerberg stated that there are a ‘bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here.’ Their comments came as a warning to the employees while the CEOs were addressing them. It is a time when the tech firms in Silicon Valley are willing to spend less and such comments surely are serious warnings for the employees.

At first, Zuckerberg cancelled the extra vacation days for employees introduced during the peak pandemic and then made these comments. This is an indication that the jolly days with a lot of freebies in the tech giants may come to an end. While making the comments about low productivity, Google’s CEO said, “There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the headcount we have. (We need to) create a culture that is more mission-focused, more focused on our products, more customer-focused.”

Many tech companies are facing an economic slowdown due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. But it is not all the fault of the employees according to the writer and journalist Dan Lyons. In his book ‘How Silicon Valley Made Work Miserable for the Rest of Us’, he tells that by offering these perks tech companies actually make their employees work longer hours and with less work-life balance.
