What is ‘JioBook’, 4G enabled ‘cheapest’ laptop being launched by Reliance Jio?

Reliance Group has partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft to make wireless telecommunication products for JioBook laptops

New Delhi: After the success of its low-cost JioPhone in India, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio could bring a new revolution in the tech market with its yet-to-launched laptop, which is said to be ‘cheaper than smartphones’.

A report by news agency Reuters says that the telecommunications conglomerate can soon unveil a low-cost, 4G sim card embedded laptop called ‘JioBook’ in the country.

While the company is yet to comment on the reports, here we have brought all about the forthcoming laptop range from Jio.

What is JioBook?

Jio aims to replicate the success of its low-cost JioPhone in India. Reliance Group has partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft to make wireless telecommunication products for JioBook laptops. Computing chips are being powered by Arm Limited and several apps will be provided by Windows OS maker.

The laptop will have its own JioOS operating system and will have the facility to download apps from JioStore. The company will produce the laptop locally with contract manufacturer Flex and aims to sell thousand of units of it by March.

JioBook’s official launch is said to be held by the end of this year, followed by a 5G-enabled version. Counterpoint analyst Tarun Pathak says that the launch of JioBook laptops in the Indian market can increase the demand for laptops by 15 per cent.

According to research firm IDC, the total personal computer shipments in India last year stood at 14.8 million units, which includes computers from HP, Dell and Lenovo.
