6.6 magnitude earthquake claims at least 46 lives in Southwest China

New Delhi: Owing to an earthquake of 6.6 magnitudes, at least 46 people lost their lives in China’s Southwest area, according to media reports. Owing to the damage by the quake, a few homes get damaged and electricity also went off.

The US Geological Survey said that the magnitude of 6.6 quake occurred about 43 kilometres southeast of the city of Kangding in Sichuan province at depth of 10 kilometres.

In some parts of the area, landslides were also triggered by the quake, as per the CCTV footage.

Soon after the tragic incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered the local authorities to launch the rescue operation to save lives at the earliest.

“Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out rescue efforts to minimize casualties after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China’s Sichuan Province Monday, stressing that saving lives should be taken as the primary task, ” wrote China Xinhua News on Twitter.

The 29 deceased are said to belong to Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Luding County. The other 17 dead were from Ya’an City.

The Red Cross Society of China initiated a Level-III emergency response following the earthquake and sent a working group who are supposed to help with the relief and rescue work.
