New Delhi: Nag Panchami will be celebrated this year on August 2, 2022 by the Hindu community.
History and significance of Nag Panchami 2022:
According to the Hindu mythology, it is believed that Hindu deity Krishna was playing by the side of river Yamuna when his ball got stuck in the branches and when he tried to retrieve the ball, Krishna fell into the river and was attacked by Kaliya, the snake.
It was during this period when Krishna was fighting hard with the snake when the snake realised that Krishna was not an ordinary child hence, pleaded him not to kill it.
After this, Krishna had spared the snake by taking a promise that it will trouble the people hence, Nag Panchmi is celebrated to mark the victory of Krishna who saved the lives of people from Kaliya-the dangerous snake.
How is Nag Panchami celebrated?
In Maharashtra, Nag Panchmi is celebrated by visiting door-to-door by taking a dormant cobra in a plate. While in Kerala, to ask alms and clothing while in Kerala, the devotees visit snake temples and worship a stone or metal icon of snake. Devotees offer prayers to protect them and their family members from snake bites.
On this day, snake idols are worshipped and cow’s milk, fried paddy, rice’s breed and durva (tip of a special grass) is offered before the nag.
In yet another Hindu mythology, it said that Hindu deity loves and blesses snakes, hence the devotees worship nag(snakes) to please him.
Lord Shiva, is believed to be one of the most short-tempered Gods. He is considered to even ruin people’s life if he gets angry hence, on this day devotees worship live cobras and offer milk.
