New Delhi: Towards the end of the winter, people of the Northern parts of India come together to celebrate. Lohri is one of the prominent festivals celebrated to welcome the spring season.

The main reason behind the celebration is for harvesting the Rabi crop in Northern parts such as Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

This year, it will be celebrated on the 14th of January, 2023 with the auspicious time at 08:57 PM.

While most people are confused between two dates – 13th January and 14th January, as per the Drik Panchang, the ideal date and time for Lohri this year is 14th of January, 2023 at 08:57 PM.

The significance behind the festival:

Lohri festival is specifically celebrated by the Hindu community. This comes just a day before Makar Sankranti. The festival is considered to be very auspicious as people offer a tribute to all the farmers around the world. Meanwhile, in the Sikh community, people arrange a grand fair in order to commemorate the martyrdom of the immortal ones which they call – Chaali Muktae, and offer Sikh Adras in front of them.

The story behind the occasion:

The story takes us back to the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar. There used to be a dacoit in Punjab named Dulla Bhatti who was popular for his courage and fearless attitude. He once rescued slave girls and arranged their marriages all alone.

In order to celebrate this victory of Dulla and his exploits Mundri and Sundri, the people of the region have made this tale as a part of the folklore. they even made many folk songs based on this. These songs are now sung at the festival.
