Govt willing to give more stimulus if required, says FM Sitharaman

New Delhi: As the nation battles economic distress and negative growth mainly because of Covid-19 pandemic and Lockdown, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has hinted that the Centre is ready for more stimulus to Corona-hit sectors, if required.

“Amid a rising number of novel coronavirus cases in India and its ensuing onslaught on the economy, the Centre is willing to give more stimulus to various sectors hit due to Covid-19,” Sitharaman told Indian Express in an interview.

The Modi government had announced a Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package in May 2020 to subdue the effects of the pandemic on the economy.

Sitharaman said that the emergency liquidity guarantee was expanded from MSMEs to cover proprietorships, partnerships and even individual professionals.

“Even , the funding of NBFCs was increased and banks were given more priority,” she said.

When asked if the package would be immediate, Sitharaman said: “There’s no point in me hurriedly getting something out. What we have announced till now, it is not as if it has benefited one at the cost of another.”
