Covid-19: John Hopkins University report on India impact creates panic, now comes the denial

The report’s 33-page summary, dated 24 March, gained wide publicity in India because of its alarming nature about the spread of the virus in the country.

New Delhi: A news report on the spread of Covid-19 cases in India, citing John Hopkins University and Centre for Disease Dyanmics, Economics and Policy (CDDEP), claimed that coronavirus cases are set to rise exponentially in the country and set to reach its peak in April-May.

Today, the John Hopkins University has denied giving its authorisation to any such Covid-19 report on India and also tweeted the same.

“The use of our logo was not authorized in this case and JHU is engaging with CDDEP on it. Thank you,” the university tweeted.

Yesterday, news agency Indo-Asia-News-Services (IANS) released a story which was carried on many online news platform. The report claimed that Johns Hopkins University and the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) ITS report oN the impact of the coronavirus virus pandemic in India stated that hospitalised cases can reach up to 25 lakhs in the country and 21-day lockdown may be ineffective to stop COVID-19 peak arriving in April-May-June infecting over 12 crore Indians.

The report also claimed that community transmission in India most likely started in early March. However, the central government has constantly maintained that community transmission hasn’t yet started in India even though stern measures were being put in place to fight the covid-19 onslaught.
