The 8th of August is annually recognised as International Cat Day. This day is a wonderful reminder of the special relationship that exists between people and their feline friends. Cats have always had a unique position in our hearts and in history. With much fanfare, people across the world observe August 8 as International Cat Day to cherish their feline companions.

History

In 2002, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) created International Cat Day to show appreciation for cats worldwide. The purpose of announcing this festival is to draw attention to efforts to prevent the mistreatment of cats. In 2020, International Cat Care took over as the official organiser of International Cat Day. Since 1958, this British nonprofit is dedicated to promoting the well-being of domestic cats across the globe.

It has another old narrative despite this history. Humans first discussed cats in Ancient Egyptian civilization. Due to the Egyptians’ devotion to cats as gods, we all connect cats with them. Cats were deities and protectors to them during the First Dynasty because Mafdet, the first cat god, protected against snakes, scorpions, and other evil.

After the Egyptian Dynasty fell, cats became well-known across the globe. However, due to superstition and fear of the Black Death spreading over Europe in 1348, cats had a bad reputation throughout the Middle Ages. Many cats were killed as a result, and it wasn’t until the 1600s that cat culture began to recover its image.

And, then the IFAW established August 6 as International Cat Day in 2002.

Significance

For cat lovers, the significance of International Cat Day cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, not all felines have access to live in luxury. Cats living on the streets can face dangers and even cruelty. Therefore, this day is significant for all genuine animal lovers. On August 8, people all around the world celebrate International Cat Day to show their love and support for cats everywhere.

Other Interesting Facts

Evidence of domesticated cats dates back to 7500 BC, although the practice of taming wild cats likely started far earlier. Researchers claim these cats assisted human farmers by reducing rat populations. Cats’ use as pest control agents increased when humans started cultivating land.

There are many references to cats in mythology and culture. Freyja, the Norse goddess of love and fertility, rode about in a chariot drawn by cats. Greek art and literature have included cats because of their symbolic significance to the goddess Athena. In addition, the ‘Maneki-Neko,’ a cat figure from Japanese mythology, is said to usher in prosperity and good fortune.
