Top 10 Universities of India: Indian Institute of Science bags 1st rank for eighth year straight

Ever since its establishment, the university has risen up as a premier institution for advanced scientific and technological research in India.

New Delhi: The National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) released its NIRF ranking for the top 10 universities of the year 2023 on Monday.

1. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru)

The foundation of IISc was laid back in 1909 by the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of
India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. Ever since its establishment, the university has risen up as a premier institution for advanced scientific and technological research in India.

This Institute has retained its 1st rank in the NIRF’s Universities category for the past eight years.

2. Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi)

Located in the National Capital Territory of New Delhi, JNU is one of the most known universities in the country for various reasons. The University which is named after India’s first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru has retained its third position in the Rankings for the 7th time.

3. Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi)

The university that was originally established in UP’s Aligarh in 1920 was later re-established at its current location in New Delhi in 1935. It was only after Independence that the university got the status of a central university. It has retained its second position for two consecutive years.

4. Jadavpur University (Kolkata)

The Jadavpur University of Kolkata was founded back in 1955 by converting the Bengal Technical Institute through legislation. The university has multiple campuses in Jadavpur and Salt Lake area.

It has maintained its 4th position for two successive years (2022-2023).

5. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

Banaras Hindu University was founded by the iconic nationalist leader Sh Pandit Madan Mohan Malivia in 1916. It was established through parliamentary legislation called The BhU Act of 1915.

6. Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Manipal)

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education, previously known as Manipal University is one of the “deemed to be universities” of the country that was founded in the year 1953. The university offers a variety of higher studies courses in more than 218 programs and 19 disciplines.

7. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Coimbatore)

Popularly known as Amrita University, it has retained its third ranking for three back-to-back years (2021-2023).

8. Vellore Institute of Technology (Vellore)

The self-financing university was established in 1984 with the intent to provide quality higher education to the youth by adapting modern and innovative methods of teaching on a constant basis.

9. Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh)

Aligarh Muslim University is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in India. It was founded by Sir Sayed Ahmad Khan back in 1875 when it was known as Mohammedan Alglo Oriantel College.

10. University of Hyderabad (Hyderabad)

Founded in the year 1974, the University of Hyderabad is one of the best universities for postgraduate teaching, education, and research in the country.
