New Delhi: The power couple Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya have completed their 50-year-long marital bond today.
The precious bond of love compassion, commitment, and companionship between two of the most iconic stars of Hindi cinema is being looked upon by many as an example of true love.
However, things were not always this perfect for the golden couple as their relationship witnessed a series of challenges, turmoil, and controversies after Rekha’s rumored entry as the ‘other woman’ in Amitabh’s life.
On the occasion of the couple’s 50 years golden jubilee, let’s have a throwback at one such instance when Bollywood’s Big B lost his cool and burst out at Jaya after being agitated by the questions regarding his affair with Rekha in an interview.
Rekha and the rumors
The enthralling story of the trio goes years back to the 1970s, a time when Bollywood’s Shahenshah tied knot with the love of his life Jaya Bhaduri in 1973. However, things soon took an unexpected turn for them after rumors about Amitabh falling for his Do Anjane Co star Rekha became the talk of the town over the years.
This was followed by Yash Chopra’s movie Silsila in 1982 which depicted the trio’s love triangle on big screens.
It was after these events that the Silsia star started receiving questions regarding his extra-martial affair with Rekha and its impact on his married life with Jaya Bachchan in various media interviews, one of which made him lose his temper.
Karan Thapar’s Interview
The interview we are referring to here was taken by journalist Karan Thapar back in 1992 where he asked the Piku actor a number of questions related to his love life as well as his rumored affair with Rekha on the occasion of his 50th birth anniversary.
Recalling the interview, Karan Thapar in his book Devil’s Advocate spoke about grilling Bollywood’s angry young man and his better half Jaya by digging into his rumored extramarital life with actress Rekha with his questions.
Although the couple jointly denied all the allegations raised by Karan regarding Mr Bachchan’s speculated extramarital relationships with Rekha and others, his intrusive questions did manage to build up a volcano of anger inside Big B which was about to be taken out on Jaya at the dinner table.
Agitated Amitabh loses his cool!
It all began when Jaya offered some rice to her husband only to hear him burst out saying “You know I never eat rice. Why are you offering me something I never have” to which startled Jaya replied saying “I am only offering you rice because roties are yet to come. This got Amitabh to lose it as he almost shouted back saying “I just don’t want rice I never have them and you too know it very well. What’s the matter with you? Why can’t you just listen to what I’m saying?”
Later, Jaya Bachchan left the room to check on roties but never returned to the dining table, wrote Karan in his book.
He further revealed that later on, he was requested by his senior Amar Singh to drop all the questions regarding Amitabh Bachachan’s extramarital affairs, and thus, the interview went on-air without them.
