New Delhi: A plea seeking an edict against filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Thursday.

The Alia Bhatt starrer movie faced some legal troubles as several individuals claiming to be the family members of the latter had objections regarding the portrayal of Gangubai’s character in the film.

The petitioner, a man, who claimed to be the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi, sought to restrain makers from promoting the name of Gangubai or the novel in the context called ‘The Mafia Queens of Mumbai’.

The special leave petition was dismissed by a bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshwari.

Gangubai, whose actual name was Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi, was a native of Gujarat. Kathiawadi is said to be sold to a brothel owner in Kamathipura by her husband at a very young age.

Kamathipura is known as one of the oldest and most scandalous and fabled red-light areas in Mumbai. From ending up as a commercial sex worker to earn herself bread to owning her own brothel, Gangu made it to one of the most prominent brothel owners of Kamathipura during the 50s and 60s.

She’ll also well known to be vocal about the rights of commercial sex workers.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s long-delayed ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is a period drama adapted from one of the chapters of noted author Hussain Zaidi’s book, ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’.

The movie which features Alia Bhatt in the titular role, along with actor Ajay Devgan in a guest appearance, will go on floor on February 25.
