Is Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi considered India’s official entry to Oscars? Here’s what we know

New Delhi: If you have to consider one of the biggest hits of Bollywood this year to date it is none other than Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. The movie features Alia Bhatt in the lead role of Gangubai. Gangubai was one of the most powerful and respected women from Mumbai’s red-light area Kamathipura during the 1960s.

Though the movie was delayed multiple numbers of times owing to Covid-19 that hit India in March 2020, it marked a box office hit after it was released in theatres. The film received appraisals from critics as well as the audience.

Buzz has been spreading across where the biographical crime drama is considered to be one of the few films that are making official entry from India to the Oscars this year. Besides, Gangubai Kathiawadi had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute long standing ovation after the end credits were shown.

Besides, the Oscar announcements will be out in two to three months. Previously, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt will be sharing her screen with her husband Ranbir Kapoor for the first time in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra. The movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni in pivotal roles. The first part of the planned trilogy will show its own cinematic universe called Astraverse.

Alia Bhatt is also basking in the success of the recently released movie, Darlings. The movie revolves around a wife (Alia) who kidnaps her abusive husband to teach him a lesson.
