Nolan’s Oppenheimer raises hackles for showing Murphy read Bhagavad Gita during intimate scene

Despite its clash with another Hollywood Giant Barbie, Oppenheimer received a stellar response from the audience and effortlessly managed to dominate the Indian box office by minting Rs 31 in just a matter of two days.

New Delhi: The awaited Biopic of American Scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, finally saw its grand release on Friday and within no time, became the biggest Hollywood opening of the year.

Despite its clash with another Hollywood Giant Barbie, Oppenheimer received a stellar response from the audience and effortlessly managed to dominate the Indian box office by minting Rs 31 crore in just a matter of two days.

However, other than receiving heaps of appreciation and love from the Indian audience, Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus has also attracted a fair share of criticism over a controversial scene which has upset a large number of movie-goers.

Oppenheimer’s controversial Bhagvad Geeta scene

In the controversial scene, Florence Pugh is shown getting on top of Cillian Murphy as she makes him chant a quote from Bhagvadgeeta ( I am become Death, destroyer of worlds) while having sexual intercourse with him.

This objectionable scene from the movie didn’t go well with a large section of society and even draw sharp criticism from Save Culture Save India Foundation.

Addressing the same issue, information commissioner Uday Mahurakar recently released press statements in which he openly called out the moviemakers for making a scathing attack on Hinduism.

In his open letters, Mahrukar has also requested the filmmaker to remove the controversial scene from the movie worldwide. The same press release further goes on to say that if their request is ignored, it will be considered an open attack on the Indian civilization.

Mahrukar even raised some questions over the Indian censor board’s decision of approving such scenes saying, “One is perplexed as to how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could approve the movie with this scene.”

Notably, this is not the first time a Hollywood project has used a Bhagvadgeeta quote in their movie as even back in 1999, Stanly Kuckbrick used a famous shloka from the holy book in his last film titled ‘Eyes wide shut’.

More on Oppenheimer

Meanwhile, even at the global box office, Oppenheimer is continuing its dream run and is predicted to earn more than then $ 165 million by this Sunday.

However, contrary to the Indian scenario, the J Robert Biopic has been slightly outperformed at the global box office by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie which is expected to reach the monstrous figure of $ 300 million by the end of this week.
