Sardar Udham shows ‘hatred towards British’, jury’s reason for not sending film to Oscars gets Netizens furious

Vicky Kaushal’s latest film ‘Sardar Udham’ along with Vidya Balan’s ‘Sherni’ were also shortlisted for India’s official entry to Oscars 2022.

New Delhi: Just a day ago, actor Vicky Kaushal congratulated Tamil film ‘Koozhangal’s’ producers, Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, as their movie became India’s official entry to Oscars 2022.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Vicky wrote, “Congratulations Vignesh Sivan, Nayanthara, and Team #Koozhangal! Go for glory!!!”

On a related note, Vicky’s latest film ‘Sardar Udham’ along with Vidya Balan’s ‘Sherni’, Yogi Babu’s Tamil movie ‘Mandela’, and Martin Prakkat led Malayalam film ‘Nayattu’ were also shortlisted for India’s official entry to Oscars 2022.

Now, jury members have explained why the most popular competitor, Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham was not selected India’s official entry to the Oscars.

Here’s the reason jury members gave for the rejection of Sardar Udham :

Indraadip Dasgupta, one of the jury members, told Times Of India, “Sardar Udham is a little lengthy and harps on the Jallianwala Bagh incident. It is an honest effort to make a lavish film on an unsung hero of the Indian freedom struggle. But in the process, it again projects our hatred towards the British. In this era of globalization, it is not fair to hold on to this hatred.”

“Many have loved Sardar Udham for its cinematic quality including camerawork, editing, sound design and depiction of the period. I thought the length of the film was an issue. It has a delayed climax. It takes a lot of time for a viewer to feel the real pain for the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre”, An another jury member Sumit Basu added.

However, jury member’s explanation for rejection of Sardar Udham did not go well with the Netizens as they pour their outrage and disappointment over microblogging site Twitter.

Here’s what SM users have to say :

One twitter user wrote, “So Indian kids lathered in poop, begging and fending for themselves in Slumdog Millionaire is more palatable as a representation of Indians. But a realistic depiction of the horrifying acts of British imperialism on our country is problematic? #SardarUdham (sic).”
