Bollywood has gifted us several historical dramas narrating the stories of kings and queens of medieval India.

New Delhi: Several directors feel like exploring the genre of historical drama which helps transport the audience into the historic age. These types of movies are a combination of both facts and fiction. Bollywood has gifted us several historical dramas narrating the stories of kings and queens of medieval India.

The recent one that is making headlines is Akshay Kumar starrer Samrat Prithviraj. The movie narrates the traces of the life and times of Prithviraj Samrat, the legendary Rajput ruler. Besides, the film is based on Prithviraj Raso, an epic poem in Braj. The movie also marks the debut of Manushi Chhillar as queen Sanyogita. If the movie has left you craving for more such historical drama, here are some you can watch this weekend:

1. Jodhaa Akhbar – Netflix

The 2008 movie Jodhaa Akhbar is a Hindi-language epic that narrates the story of Akhbar, the Mughal emperor. Directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead role. Apart from them, the movie also features Sonu Sood, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Ila Arun in important roles. The lead actors exhibit royalty and fine acting. The movie has beautiful sequences and can be watched time and again.

2. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi – Amazon Prime

The period drama film is based on the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. The film was released in 2019 and featured Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The power-packed acting made her win the National Film Award for Best Actress at the 67th National Film Awards. 

3. Bajirao Mastani – Amazon Prime

Helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie focuses on the life of Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I and his wife Mastani. The movie features a real husband-wife, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as Bajirao and Mastani. The movie also cast Priyanka Chopra in the role of Kashibai.

4. Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior – Disney+Hotstar

The movie is based on the life of Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare, who was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s trusted lieutenant. Ajay Devgn played the role of Tanhaji while his wife Kajol played the role of Tanhaji’s wife Savitri Bai Malusare. Saif Ali Khan’s performance gathered a lot of appraisals, he played the role of Udaybhan Singh Rathore, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s royal guard.

5. Mughal-E-Azam – Zee 5

This is considered to be one of the greatest historical dramas of all time. K Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam narrates the love story between a court dancer Anarkali and Mughal Prince Salim ((Emperor Jahangir). While Madhubala and Dilip Kumar play Anarkali and Salim respectively, Prithviraj Kapoor plays emperor Akbar.
