10 lakh Sukanya Samridhi Yojana accounts opened in 2 days: India Post achieves new milestone

As per official numbers, a total of 10.9 lakh (10,90,000) Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts were opened on just two days i.e. Feb 9 & Feb 10. The program saw enrolment of over 10 lakh girl child in about 1 lakh post offices across the country.

New Delhi: Creating a major milestone in expanding the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, a flagship program of Modi government, the India Post has opened more than 10 lakh new accounts in just 2 days.

The whopping figure of 10 lakh new Sukanya accounts comes as a major achievement by the India Post as it has surpassed its own target by a big margin.

On an average, the India Post opens about 33 lakh Sukanya Samriddhi accounts in a year. In 8 years of the Yojana launch, more than 2.7 crore accounts have been opened, securing the future of as many as girl child.

The rare achievement by India Post, comes on back of a week-long mega awareness drive that was launched from February 1 to February 8 in various parts of the country.

With this reachout initiative, the Postal department had set a target of opening new 7.5 lakh Sukanya Samriddhi accounts which would also commemorate the beginning of Amrit Kaal.

About Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2015 in Panipat. The Yojana predominantly focuses on the girl child as it seeks to empower them by making them financially strong. Family members can avail high interest income under this scheme and make their valuable contribution in Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao program and other women empowerment schemes also.
