186th Raising Day of Assam Rifles: History, Signification and Importance of this day

Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of the country and has immensely contributed towards tranquility and peace in the northeastern parts of India in its 186 years of glorious history.

New Delhi: The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force in India, it was raised in 1845 under the British Raj, under the name Cachar Levy. The present name which is ‘Assam Rifles’ has been used since 1917. Over the course of time, the AR has served in a number of theatres, roles and conflicts including World War I, where they served in the Middle East, Europe and World War II, in which they served mostly in Burma. The Assam Riffles were tasked with guarding the Tibet border of the Assam Himalayan region after the Chinese annexation of Tibet. They also play an important role in maintaining the law and order in the tribal parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

On March 23, Arunachal Governor BD Mishra said, Assam Rifles is one of the oldest paramilitary forces in India and has become an integral part of the northeastern states of the country. The forces have been recognized by the indigenous population as ‘friends of the Northeast’. AR has been playing a vital role in containing insurgency missions in the sensitive parts of the northeastern states while guarding the borders of the country.

The governor further said that the Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of the country and has immensely contributed towards tranquility and peace in the northeastern parts of India in its 186 years of glorious history.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday greeted the Assam Rifles personnel and their families on the occasion of the 186th Raising Day of Assam Rifles.

The minister also appreciated the courage and professionalism of the force.
“Greetings to all Assam Rifles personnel and their families on the Raising Day. The Assam Rifles is India’s oldest paramilitary force which has been at the forefront of keeping India safe for nearly 19 decades. The courage and professionalism of this force are deeply appreciated,” the Defence Minister tweeted.

Raised in 1835 as the Cachar Levy, the Assam Rifles now is the oldest paramilitary force in the country. It also has the distinction of being the most decorated force in India.
