Bihar caste break-up revealed: OBCs account for 63% population, General 16%; Full details here

The caste break-up shows 27% population as Backward Classes, 36% as Extremely Backward Classes, and 19% are Scheduled Castes.

New Delhi: Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government on Monday released the caste-based survey report. The report, giving a lowdown on caste break-up of the state, has set the stage for political bickering & face-off with Opposition parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

As per survey report, about 63% of the 13 crore population of the state form the Other Backward Class (OBC) while 16% account for General population.

The caste break-up shows 27% population as Backward Classes, 36% as Extremely Backward Classes, and 19% are Scheduled Castes.

The Survey report named Bihar Jaati Adharit Ganana was made public by the Bihar Chief Secretary.

Caste break-up

As per the report, Bhumihars constitute 2.86% of population, Brahmins 3.66%, Kurmis 2.87% and Musahars & Yadavs at 3% & 14 per cent respectively.

The scheduled caste population in the state is more than 19% while the scheduled tribe makes for 1.68% of population. The Upper caste, also called ‘savarns’ stand little above 15% of population, 15.52% to be precise.

As per caste break-up, the backward class comprise 27% of state population while extremely backward class constitutes about 36%.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav welcome the release of caste-based census and said that this will pave the way for the upliftment of all classes.

“The data of the caste-based census conducted in Bihar has been published. Many congratulations to the entire team engaged in the work of caste-based enumeration, ” Nitish Kumar tweeted.
