Construction, demolition activities banned in Delhi as air quality worsens

The ban has been imposed under stage 3 of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) as the air quality of Delhi was reported to be ‘severe’ on December 30 and is expected to worsen.

New Delhi: Delhi government has banned construction and demolition activities in the city to prevent air quality from worsening. The ban has been imposed under stage 3 of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) as the air quality of Delhi was reported to be ‘severe’ on December 30 and is expected to worsen. A committee was appointed to assess the situation of pollution in the national capital as well as forecasts by the meteorological department.

The Centre’s air quality panel instructed all actions under stage 3 of GRAP to be implemented with immediate effect, including a ban on construction and demolition activities except for essential projects. Brick kilns and hot mix plants that are not operating on fuels that are not approved in Delhi have to close operations, and the stone crushers and mining activities will also be banned.

As per reports, the Delhi government might impose restrictions on old petrol and diesel vehicles also.

The government banned non-essential construction earlier this month as the air quality worsened and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifted the restrictions after the AQI improved. Similarly, there was a ban on construction activities at the end of October, which was later lifted as the air quality improved.

Meanwhile, the contractors and parties involved in construction and demolition are unhappy with the trend of bans regularly as it put their work on hold. People involved in the business are asking for a permanent solution from the government.
